EX6 oh so close
EX6 have had quite the season, although you wouldn't think it looking at the league table. But of course it was all part of the plan for manager Rbjayb. After last season's title win, this season was all about the XCL as the Englishman tried his best in the biggest competition of them all before his team were over the hill.
And after safely getting through to the quarter-finals after beating Zabriskie Point, things were about to get even tougher when they met Hattrick Leage stalwarts, Bolt Thrower. METALAC's men were favourites to win and watching fans were hopeful of a possible meeting with arch rivals The AntiChrists if they were to progress.
The first-leg was disappointing for EX6 at home but at the same time manager Rbjayb would have been happy to draw 1-1. Despite having only one chance in the game they scored it through Darth Maul, and managed to keep Bolt Thrower at bay until the 87th minute despite them having 7 chances. Rbjayb - the master of mind games - talked off his team's chances in the second-leg...but a surprise was on the cards.
Gerardo Cabaça gave EX6 an early lead to shock Bolt Thrower at home however it wasn't long until Januário Spora equalised the score and the tie as a whole. Extra-time looked a viable destination. But EX6 shared the possession well throughout the match and tried to break as often as possible. As the game trickled into added time, substitute striker Rico Camconi fired in a low and powerful effort into the bottom corner. EX6 were into the XCL semi-finals to the dismay of METALAC but to the sheer joy of Rbjayb.
That joy would soon turn to tension as EX6 met 3-time XCL winners The AntiChrists. The first-leg was away this time around but yet again EX6 caused controversy when they secured a 1-1 draw. Camconi scored EX6's only chance of the game and caused a lot of talk in the post-match comments again. Many believed AntiChrists deserved to win but for now EX6 were still in this and could possible cause a huge upset.
The second-leg came around and Chrille seemed to be under more pressure to win than his counterpart. Rbjayb had set a target of reaching the quarter-finals so at this stage everything was a bonus. But Chrille had spoke of being the first manager to win 4 XCL titles for some time and so needed to win.
Julien Exton eased Chrille's nerves after just 10 minutes with a delightful free kick. 23 minutes later though Dino Carmelo eqaulised for EX6. The game was much tighter than anticipated as both sides set out to frustrate the other. Extra-time came and went before sadly for EX6, a penalty shootout was declared with Chrille as the favourite to progress. Deivis Ovarez and Sid Reed missed their spot kicks which ensured The AntiChrists went through to the final winning the shootout 4-2.
Of course Chrille and his men went on to win the final. EX6 should feel mightily proud of their achievement, but fans will be wondering what's next for EX6? ........................................................................................................... Just five seasons before being relegated to Division 3, EX6 had made it to the Champions League semi finals, only to be knocked out by eventual c |
