Where are they now? - Avd. 53! |
Hello and welcome to the second instalment of the ‘where are they now’ feature, I be your host and reporter for this one (you knew I couldn’t stay away) as we take a look at a side who’ve made an impressive impression on me throughout my time on this website and now knowing how monstrous this article is, without further ado I shall press on to analyze one of the least widely recognized yet most successful teams on xpert eleven - Avd. 53.
Preceding stardom
So Avd.53, one of the most polished and refined sides on xpert eleven but they didn’t always used to be that way. Oh no, back in the day they were just an amateur team, finally turning professional on the nineteenth of August 2003 at the official opening of the inaugural Final League Season. Back then they were managed by Ma_nge and had a team consisting of bricklayers, farmers, policemen, tapeworm extractors... and any other willing member of the community. Unfortunately the game engine doesn’t go back far enough to reveal some of the ancient signings made by Avd. 53 (then called IFK Mange) but what we do know is they sold one player – a 29/4 called B.Fallbrink would you believe – while a further two retired at the end of the season, a glorious season I hasten to add. Let’s give Ma_nge his dues, before he was expulsed from the site for whatever reason he started what would prove to be a massive roll of honour at Avd/Mange by bagging the club their first promotion in professional football from the Final League Division 3b, although could only finish 2nd in that eight teamed division, the only one of those other seven teams still in existence today are Fukinagashi SC (then called Valencia CF) who could only manage 7th that season.
Midway through season 2 and sauntering through a rather poor second season now in Division 2 of course; Ma_nge left Mange IFK in the lurch in desperate need of a swindler rather than a dwindler in the market, to turn them into a Final League driving force. And there he came, striding through the mist and shadows surrounding the revolving doors at Avd (which have since been removed as they’re no longer required) – Gunnar! Armed with not much experience from anywhere having only just netted his first job on xpert eleven on the 17th of January 2004 (a day later he grabbed his first and currently only job in Xpert Ladies football), he stepped into the hotseat at the newly renamed Avd. 53.
Now I’m sure we’ve come across our fair share of outspoken managers in the past, I mean you only have to look at real life football and you see a vast array of examples of outspoken managers; Mourinho, Warnock, Redknapp, everyone in Barcelona that’s no Guardiola etc. Was Gunnar like that? Was he heck as like, a calm, serene and media-shy boss, Gunnar preferred to do his talking in the transfer market and then out on the pitch. We don’t have any notes of his signings in 2004 but on the pitch his Avd side enjoyed profound success, winning Division 2c in Season 3, narrowly missing out on another promotion the following season before finally hitting the big time in Season 5, Tage Stenklyft scoring the winning championship goal with an outstanding 30 yard drive to catch Ollas unaware in what was the final game of the season for Avd against Bågskytte BK.
Now overtime certain teams develop little mini-battles with each other, rivalries if you will and Gunnar's Avd. 53 was no different, the inward manager wasn't anything like the typical manager going to the Sun or Mourinho going to every paper but there was one manager and team who did seem to get up his nose often, that being Söderkvist and his Jokkmokk Vårdcentral side and we caught up with the Jokkmokk man himself to shed some light on the fun natured rivalry between the two:
XD: So Söderkvist your side haven't played a friendly match for nigh on 5 years now but before that you enjoyed a cracking rivalry with Avd. 53 - what was it that brought about this rivalry or was it done out of friendship?
Soderkvist: There is no friendship between us in Jokkmokk and those big city fancy boys in Avd. 53. They are a bunch of no good bolsheviks! We all would be better off if they just would die already.
XD: You and your side have many similarities to Avd, one of those being the loyalty both you and Gunnar have shown to your respective clubs, do you think it's better to continue the chain of development rather than swapping teams and has there been a time where you've considered departing Jokkmokk?
Soderkvist: Departing our miserable lives are the only thing we ever contemplate in Jokkmokk. But they won't let us die, they just keep us alive in this terrible nursing home. To answer your question, we in Jokkmokk would never leave this town. We hate it everywhere else. I can imagine those communists in Avd. 53 are too righteous to leave their team.
XD: Another similarity between the two clubs is how you develop the sides, you've both got relatively young teams at the *cough* moment yet thanks to the experienced heads in the side, have both stayed in the top three or four tiers of the Final League, just how is it you've managed to achieve such a good development sustainability?
Soderkvist: Young teams! Are your deranged? In Jokkmokk there aren't a player under 90 years old. We all live in a nursing home, mind you. Experienced heads, that would've been good, if it weren't for the alzheimers. And the outright madness. And the screams in the night. And the dead ones in the morning. Winter is coming. And the reindeer herds...
Top of the tree
So Avd entered season 6 of the Final League in high spirits, their first shot at the big time but could they bag the prizes straight from the off? Well in typical Avd style they rattled off the wins in hard-fought style; a 2-1 there, a 3-0 here in fact we have nothing in the archives that wasn’t an Avd win that season and they took the Final League Season 6 Title at their first attempt after promotion, phenomenal!
He was soon dubbed “Gunnar von Pickelhaupt – the Factory Owner” by certain sections of the media, his celebrations for this title weren’t out this world and there wasn’t a tremendous following afterwards, the only thing Gunnar seemed to care about afterwards was the long term future of the club and from this was experience the first masterstroke signing of the Gunnar era, Patrik Iwarson who was a 17/6 goalkeeper when he signed for just 7.2 million econ, a player you’d probably have to pay an arm and a leg for if you wanted one today such is the inflation in the market now we’ve progressed from the noughties. He was the first cog in the Gunnar revolution and twenty-one seasons on he’s still cluttering the place, now a 38/15 goalkeeper with over 300 games of competitive experience to boot, he is arguably Avd’s most prized possession and their best player of all time, the word ‘bargain’ doesn’t even cover it but more about him later as for now Avd had an XCL campaign on their hands.
Gunnar’s eyes lit up at the prospect of an XCL tournament, a time to test his side against the best of the best at this time, he even put domestic commitments to one side as he chased his first XCL Title. Now this was before the time of International Leagues so Avd’s opponents were going to come from the Swedish League’s from the time and they were drawn in Group C alongside: Xtreme League Cup Winners, Fluffers FF (who are now an all-youth team managed by mr experimental, ____Jeff), Xpertsvenskan – former name of the rebranded Xpert International followed the big xpert political movement to rid of the ‘Swedish conspiracy’ - Cup Winners, Strandhems IF and Major League Winners, Tottenham Hotspurs FC who to this day are managed by their original manager Descartes and haven’t undergone any name changes since they entered xperteleven – fanatic longetivity! Anyway Avd. 53 breezed past their group keeping clean sheets in all their opening five games, winning four and drawing one, the first figment of Gunnar’s teambuilding method I’d say, the fact he focussed on defending so closely. If I had to describe Gunnar then I’d probably liken him to the last two major bosses of the Gunners ;) and no not just because I’m an Arsenal fan, he built his platform on defending just like the great George Graham but was susceptible to the odd diamond youth signing in the market. Thirteen points out of a possible fifteen left them with an unassailable lead in their group to the other teams who seemed to be there to make up the numbers and so it didn’t matter that Avd lost their last group game 1-0 to Fluffers FF and even then Fluffers needed ninety minutes to break the deadlock so all in all Avd went over 9 hours of XCL Football without conceding a goal until finally succumbing to a Carlos Apache Tevez strike, amazing and they’d not turned into one of the biggest threats in the competition.
Progressing with second placed side Strandhems IF (American Pie’s last gasp victory not enough to see them through), Avd’s young team faced FFK Århus of the Euro League managed by Flebbe. The first tie was a home game for Avd and they sailed through after an unreal opening twenty minutes: Piton, Tingström and Daly all netting to put Avd three up. Being the most experienced player on the team, and the fittest indicated by the horses head (even before horses heads existed) Tingström had an awful amount of responsibility at the forefront of the Avd team and this was a lot for a player of only 28 years of age. Avd added a fourth to their lead just before the break through August Kastlander and with little action in the second half, Avd were confident of reaching the semis. Their opposition went into never-say-die mood for the second leg by fielding a gung-ho 343 formation but Avd easily set them aside with Lentini and Kastlander again on the scoresheet to set up a semi final date for Avd against Malmö FF’s side... Malmö FF. Facing what felt like stronger opposition, Avd went all backs against the wall in the first leg to eliminate the possibility of an away goal, fielding 541 against the visitors’ 352 and they almost snatched the win but despite being a natural poacher, David Daly’s penalty was sporadically kept out by the immense Strandlund to leave the game deadlocked heading into the second leg.
Avd could sense their prey would be intimidated after the first leg encounter and went more structured with a 442 in the second leg; Malmö likewise went for the 442 so were now sacrificing their possession advantage. Avd went ahead early on too from an Aldo Lentini strike requiring Malmö to score twice, Oscar Cederquist got one of these goals with a neat finish from the edge of the area just before half time leaving this one finely poised for the second 45. Avd tightened up knowing if they shut up shop they’d be in the final, their opponents pranced around and pestered them for all it was worth but the strong Avd defence proved impenetrable and ten minutes before the end Tage Stenklyft still only 22 years of age scored the goal that would melt in the hearts of many an Avd fan with a crucial goal to seal their passage into the Final and boot Malmö out. So which giant would lie in wait for Avd in the final? None other than... Strandhems? The team they beat 2-0 and 1-0 in the group stages? Oooh la la.
Now back in those days the XCL Final was a two legged affair still and like in their previous rounds, Avd got the luxury of having the home leg first. What could MathiasW throw into the fire to change the fortunes of his ailing side’s record against Gunnar’s men? Well his side pulled the fast one by going for a 352 away from home while Avd again wanted to stick with their rigid 442 system which worked wonders for them in the semis. They got off to a terrific start too when Kastlander whipped over a corner and lo and behold, big Italian centre half Nicola Baglieri crashed the ball into the back of the net with his head and Avd were one up, well a defender would have to have their moment in the limelight wouldn’t they. In the second half things turned ugly when Ulrik Cederström jarred his elbow into the face of Lentini sparking an all-out pushy-shovey match between both sets of players, Ulrik was sent off in the aftermath leaving . Worse was to come though when Victor Doguzov repeated the trick with an arm being flung wildly into the face of goalkeeper Hans-Ove Liljedahl, although he got off with just a booking, goodness knows why, he left the goalkeeper concussed and yes – you guessed it – Patrik Iwarson would finally get his first taste of XCL stardom! He saw out the rest of this fixture and not only that, but he was in the starting eleven for the second leg of the final too!
So second leg, packed stadium at Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, could Strandhems overturn the deficit? They too went 343 to look for goals after playing so mediocre in the first leg of the final while Gunnar stuck to his guns with his favoured 442. And it were the visitors that controlled the first half, pristine passing to compliment their tough-tackling nature and the hosts’ hearts sunk when – just before the break – David Daly atoned for his semi final penalty miss with a sweetly struck strike from twelve yards to edge Avd in front. Now Avd knew there was still a task to do but they began to get rather half-hearted in their tackling in the second half, a punishable offence at any stage in the XCL not least the final and Olle Lund squared for Dan-Åke Skoglund to head home one of now three essential goals for Strandhems and with 20 minutes to go they could afford themselves a glimmer of hope at least! Eight minutes though this hope was dashed, Aldo Lentini – the club’s star freekick taker as one of the club’s most senior players at 23 years old, sent over a freekick that was magnificently half-volleyed into the back of the net by Daly to make it 1-2 and effectively win the XCL for Avd!
And it was there the Final Whistle sounded, Avd. 53 – in their first ever XCL after their first ever League win in their first ever Final League elite stage season – were XCL Champions! And what was the average age of this all-conquering squad? A meagre 22, a record which still stands today as the youngest side ever to win the prized possession and it was abundantly clear that with this XCL win, Gunnar had created a new XCL legacy that Swedish managers would go on to exploit forever more!
The quest for more gold
So often have we seen the XCL Trophy as the final curtain for some managers: Duffster and Blu3red didn’t remain with their teams long after bagging the glory, we saw last time out even Gildar fancied a break from xpert leagues for a bit after his XCL win but again Gunnar was different in his own quiet, inward sort of way – he was determined to keep the success at Avd running! So where were we? Ahh yes Season 7 of the Final League which was distinctly ordinary for Avd who were unable to keep their great run in the league going on top of their XCL glory run – not that there’s any shame in that, 4th place in the League was very respectable and their very next season witnessed their closest assault on the Final League double yet, in the League they rattled off the wins with considerable ease, they suffered a momentary slip up at home to Holt Park but they were devastatingly good everywhere else and looked odds on in the League. In the cup meanwhile they’d surpassed a previous club’s best semi final return in Season 3 by reaching the Final in Season 8 after a commendable semi final narrow 0-1 win over Yeovil Town. It just so happened that Avd’s final opponents would be the team they were playing in a sort of cameo dress rehearsal in the League before the final - Nolgård BK. A cut and thrust performance from the hearts of the Avd players led to an easy 3-0 win in the League and Avd were favourites for the cup. Nolgård were having their best season to date though, almost recording a midtable finish in their first season in the top flight and in the Final they were extraordinary, out-manoeuvring Avd and goals from Matanovic, Nordahl and Uddén cancelled out Piton’s drilled effort to give Nolgård the win and Gunnar a first taste of cup final defeat. It made no difference to the club’s confidence in the League, they won their last game to net a second Final League Title and guarantee more XCL Football for the club!
Another league title in the bag, a final cup defeat to build on but love him or loathe him, Gunnar was doing a fantastic job at Avd and soon bagged himself a new four year contract with the club for his efforts. What could the club do in their next XCL campaign though now they’d clinched the League Title? Well the 8th edition of the XCL saw Avd this time placed in Group D with Major League Cup Winners – Miklos – and two other sides who have since been deleted (a crying shame I know). It was still an all-Swedish manager in Swedish leagues round table and given Avd’s results against Miklos were a 1-1 draw and 2-0 defeat, I think it’s safe to say Avd won at least 3 of the 4 other games given they qualified for the quarter final stage. Up in the Quarter Finals was another breed of Major Leaguers, this time S.S. Lazio who were crowned ML winners in their League that season. Avd weren’t brushing teams aside like they did in the previous competition which was quite overwhelming, their attacking potency was quite subdued but they did net the only chance of the first leg for either side which arose from a freekick which Lentini glided into the roof of the goal. That was the away game so typically Avd adopted a 451 at home to relieve the 433 threat of the major Leaguers and again came up trumps with Piton opening the scoring and then after Lazio equalized a Mr Bert-Ola Haber scored the goal to clinch Avd’s place in the next round, momentous for the fact Haber would then go on to score 98 domestic goals in 123 appearances, a goal every one and a quarter games on average. Artur’s Bara United lay in wait for Avd in the semis – or the modern day Lionhearts F.C. if you will managed now by former England number one, Ogman.
The first leg was astounding, formation choices of 442 and 451 kept it tight but on home patch Avd did it again with Piton and Stenklyft sealing a 2-0 victory. Avd still then hadn’t been knocked out of the XCL approaching the second leg but were in major danger of doing so here. The Euro leaguers halved the deficit on aggregate midway through the first half with a sweetly struck Otto Hübinette strike then seven minutes before the end, with Avd coaxing by now, they were stunned when Lasse Thorell broke free to slot beyond Iwarson. The tie was now level on aggregate, extra time was summoned and passed by without incident so what was remaining? Ahh yes, penalties! And what a shootout! Bara United had already missed twice testimony to young Iwarson and goals from Helge Wilander, a future club favourite, Piton and Bo Cederholm and though Rafaele Ekelund missed the target with his kick, Frederick Lindqvist missed the vital spotkick, sending Bara out and offering Avd a chance to be the first side to win two XCL Titles. These were exciting times for Avd but their opposition was Schakal IF managed by Hedins – the winners of the first ever XCL! The potential remained with Avd but the power and strength led straight at Schakal’s door and for that reason, Schakal were the favourites to lift the trophy.
The first match was the 29th of March 2006 and Schakal had the home leg first. Both teams held station at 442, neither venturing not even for the Swedish made famous 352 formation, and the similarities spoke volumes because Schakal romped to victory. The first half was tighter than Simon Cowell’s waistline but in the second half, the experienced cadets launched into action and Hantizslav Moldauti headed home a corner twelve minutes into the half. Now at 1-0 things didn’t look too bad for Avd, but in the ninetieth minute Moldauti took a corner himself and laid it on a plate for John Nylén to bang home the winning goal and give Schakal a 2-0 cushion going into the second leg. Fast forward to the 5th of April 2006 to the second leg, Avd weren’t panicking, Gunnar stood by the 442 while his opponent grimacely did the same. Truth be told it looked over for Avd when Brandquist brought down Barkroth in the penalty area and fullback Fritz Gärdin as cool as you like powered the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 0-3 to Schakal on aggregate and now they had the elusive away goal, Avd required at least four goals to deprive Schakal of the title. It wasn’t going to happen was it, or was it? The game just ticked past the half hour mark and Cederholm somehow squeezed the ball over for Tage Stenklyft to head home on the stretch. A lifeline maybe just before the break? So it turned out to be, eleven minutes into the second half Helge Wilander dispatched a wonderful effort which skimmed off a few players ankles en route to the bottom corner, two goals down – two to go! Then on seventy minutes Lentini sent over a low cross which Piton volleyed past a hapless Everbrand, 3-1 to Avd and now 3-3 on aggregate, one goal would do it! Unfortunately for Avd that goal never came, Schakal’s defence recovered from those body blow onslaughts to grind out the match on the ropes and were victors when the final whistle sounded, Avd had done a lot, but not enough and it would be Schakal who would go down in history as being the first team to win the XCL twice after they became the first team to win it once.
As much a blow it was for Avd to lose out on away goals which some would argue is worse than losing out on penalties because effectively they didn’t lose, they drew but hey, they recovered as Avd were never a team set on a few glorious seasons at the top of their game, Gunnar had a whole strategic plan mapped out to keep the fruit ripe at Avd for many seasons to come. Now I understand I’ve probably exhausted your eyes quite a bit in reading the above part and I’d love to condense it but as you may have realized there is simply so much which this wonderful team has gone through in the past but for the purpose of space I’ll try and keep as much of the next bit brief.
Avd wavered a bit in their next few domestic league campaigns but lo and behold, what they lose in the League they gain in the cup, season 9 was their big re-concentration on the XCL but in season 10 they mounted yet another assault on the Final league double. They were in pole position to take the title despite losing their first game of the season to Hellblau Supras, however defeats in their last two games – one of which was against the Spuras – contrived in allowing the Supras win the title. Unfortunately beyond the quarter finals we have no record of Avd’s last two cup opponents but in Season ten they took the Final League Cup for the first time in their history meaning in ten seasons Gunnar had got his side promoted to the top flight of Final League Football, won the Final League Title, Cup and XCL, revolutionizing how to play the game and ensuring Avd were in the hallmarks of xpert eleven forever more.
Season eleven was a difficult season; it felt as if Avd were finally feeling the effect of numerous entries to the XCL, had it taken a toll on their youth development system? Well Gunnar was still reaping the funds of a successful buy/sell system but things began to deteriorate for Avd, a poor season accommodating an early cup defeat, a poor League season and an XCL Group Stage campaign which despite yielding three wins – one a 6-1 win – they couldn’t progress due to the establishment of the International Leagues meaning only the top ranked side would go through to the Quarter Finals, the second placed side in each group missed out. At one point Avd lost six matches on the bounce, the worst run they’d encountered since their inaugural season in the Final League and despite encouraging wins against Brujería and Jellax in their final bid for freedom, a poor last day defeat against F.C. Internazionale condemned the club to their first demotion ever to the second tier of the Final League after finished 6th in the standings.
Come Season 12 and they were back, they won a few games by plentiful score lines, grinded out many wins, drew a couple and lost a couple including a last day defeat against their new foes on the last day, Internazionale who liked beating Avd despite finishing below them. The cup was a major talking point again and they played their last three rounds of it against teams from their own division. I Tanzana were first up and a great battling defensive display combined with a long range Haber effort gave Avd a quarter final victory. Next up – F.C. Internazionale! This was before that last day defeat but Avd seemed longing to lose to the Italian side every time they played them. Eurico Flores scored what seemed for all the world like the winning goal on 77 minutes after a dreary first 76 minutes but a late smash and grab with goals from Haber and a freekick from Lentini – proving to be the driving force in the Avd team – launched Avd into their third Final League Cup Final! Again we had a little mini-league dress rehearsal for the final in which Avd came from behind to defeat their opponents – Sultans of Samba – 1-2 thanks to two Lentini freekicks with the winner coming in injury time. The showpiece event was very much defence versus attack, sensing a strong response after the short respite, Gunnar set up his team with a 541 formation, Haber the lone striker while Samba led by Markusfrank were sporting an attacking 433 formation. The first goal came in the opening five minutes, Wilander finding Piton with a low cross who diverted the ball into the corner for 1-0... and that proved to be the only goal with Avd coming out 1-0 winners!
A sensational further triumph from Gunnar and to continue with the thick of things this gave them another avenue into the XCL! By now they’d strengthened their palette with some quality youth signings: Joe Pepe a 19/10 defender for 23.9 million econ, Sverre Vessel a 16/5 midfielder for 6.4 million econ, Sune Adelsköld a 17/8 defender for 16.5 million econ and Taribo Olofinjana a 19/10 striker for 25.6 million econ. This came to a staggering 72.4 million econ but in this climate, with youth teams merely a myth of existence, could Gunnar make these young signings work? Another crack at the XCL and they somehow topped the group and advanced straight to the quarters despite being in what seemed like the group of death in Group G which contained the all-conquering Hellmoppers side, as well as future Dream League Giants – a side once managed and succeeded with by Duffster – FC Garrett Park while the Black Sea Raiders added to the theatre. Could they go any further? Well standing in their way was the team who won the XCL the season immediately after Avd had claimed the glittering prize, Skultorp United managed then by bacheleten but now by the brilliant creator of these articles, Bejjita! A late cameo in the 84th and 86th minute for Skultorp left Avd with a lot to do overturning a 2-0 deficit, they did manage to overturn it though in the second leg by hook or by crook by bringing the tie back to 2-2 but in extra time Jan-Olof Carlström steadied his nerve and lashed home a spotkick to send Skultorp through and Avd out the competition.
A new hope
(Everyone breathe). After these overwhelming successes, Gunnar swung back in his spinny chair and flicked all the switches to make Avd concentrate on the future and their future seasons were baron as other sides took to the fore. Their transition period coincided with the major influx of International (i.e. non-Swedish) managers to the League and in my opinion this goes some way to explain why Avd. 53 may not be as widely recognized as some clubs, while nobego and motorroger were basking in success, Gunnar was too busy wondering how to monopolize xpert eleven. The further his side dropped was one season in the third tier after relegation away from the top flight in season four, they immediately were re-promoted though and continued their ascent back towards the top flight. Their major signings in this period were scrabble-lover, Massimiliano Ruotolo (incidentally sold the morning I was writing this article for 41.1 million econ so that nets Gunnar loads more of lovely econ), and the much feared Sylvester Acreman who was a freekick assassin! After yo-yo’ing for quite a while between the top flight and Division 1, season 19 finally brought Avd back to their Final League home, and this time there was to be no yo-yo’ing taking place. Oh no now with players like Pepe, Olofinjana, Wilander and of course, Mr Iwarson all in their prime – Avd were primed to take advantage.
Taking over from Jokkmokk Vårdcentral’s old aged pensioner demolition of the Final League, Avd ran sword by sword against the then global number one, Kcnr1, and his Olympique Baguette side. A slippy-slidey start saw Avd start season 20 quite poorly with just one win in four but a 2-1 win against Baguette soon kicked Avd into action. They were still prone to mistakes though Bågskytte BK they had a 3-2-3 record in the League – not form of Champions by any stretch of the imagination. However, Gunnar had some more tricks up his sleeve and then after a win and a draw to Baguette, his side finished off the season with four 1-0 wins to finish off the season, coining the team chant ‘1-0 to the Avd’ in the process. Sadly despite the grave-jumping comeback they produced, it wasn’t enough to prize the League away from Baguette despite taking four points off them and Avd had to make do with second place, but they would be back...
And so they were in Season 21, bulked with one more season of experience and on year of age for Kcnr1’s aging side, a 3-0 win to kickoff the season sounded like the perfect start but Avd went on a win-lose-win-lose-win-lose streak leaving them in midtable on nine points after six fixtures and Gunnar could only watch as one of those losses was a 5-0 humiliation which seemed to spread the cat amongst the pigeons as the bookies saw it. Baguette were the opposition for the double-header, a confident 1-2 away win followed and a 4-2 win on home soil – 4-2 being a kind score on Baguette – re-emerged Avd as the favourites to win the title, but could they end the season as well as they ended the last? Well they were juggling cup commitments with this Title challenge but an unbeaten run to finish the season saw Avd crowned as champions and wouldn’t you know it, they were in a cup final too! Beating Baguette in the semi finals, Avd faced Mega Guns – the side that had beaten them 5-0 earlier in the season, in the final. It was a tense affair, far tighter than the 5-0 match but Valeriano Materazzi silenced the budding Avd faithful with an awesome strike with twelve minutes to go and Acreman’s late sending off ended Avd’s third shot at a double winning season – oh well – XCL Football was just round the corner!
Since they were last here the XCL had undergone some major changes, one of those being the inclusion of a round of last sixteen to accommodate the second placed teams from each group in the second round but now the International leagues had all but caught up with the more established Leagues as proved by Krazy_galah’s run to the Final with his Golden League side just three seasons previous, so Avd had to be wary of all their competition this time out. Paired with Master League Cup winning Aurora, League of Champs Cup Winning Gardenia and simply... DIF71sGötecastleuleå of the Hattrick League, this was one tough group for Avd on their return to the big time. One point from their opening two games after being humbled away at Gardenia raised no eyebrows in terms of potential threats and they only won one in their next three games needing a win against Aurora to go through, anything else and they’d be a shock exit at the groups! But as cool as you like, Avd came through against Aurora with a routine 2-0 victory to qualify after 2 wins, 3 draws and a defeat.
This set them up with a second round tie with Los Caffos who have since been deleted but according to my old XCL reports, Los Caffos took a 2-1 lead with them to Avd after doing exceedingly well in the first leg but goals from Wilander with a penalty and freekick and a clincher from Haber led to a Quarter Final tie, and who would that be with?
Oh Bejjita’s team again (boy I wish he’d stop following us :d), Joppes Hjältar. Despite a strong defensive performance from Joppes, it wasn’t enough to hold back Avd who made a huge leap towards the next round with a 2-0 win, Joe Pepe of all people bagging a goal with a piledriver and Wilander also scored from a ridiculous distance only this time from a dead ball. A bruising encounter in the next leg left Avd’s dreams in tatters, a flying tackle eliminated Wilander from the game who had earlier set up Sverre Vessel for the game’s opening goal. Joppes equalized but by now they needed four to progress – not happening and indeed it didn’t. So Avd moved on into the semis and who were their opposition? Lo and behold the return of Gardenia. Avd had only picked up one point out of a possible six in the group games between these two but that’s why we wipe slates clean when we’re done with them. Avd took the sneaky advantage back to Gardenia with them after a Haber header (try saying that one over and over) before finishing the job off at Sky Valley, Olofinjana joining Haber in scoring to make for a 1-2 victory, 1-3 on aggregate and move Avd into another XCL Final!!
Awaiting Avd in the Final were FC Ballbreakers, formerly managed by franzie but now under ShaggyDude’s leadership who had already got in the HoF with his ladies side, he was looking to replicate this success with his xpert side. But boom shock horror, ShaggyDude was nowhere to be seen on matchday, where was he? Some conspiracy theorists believed he’d been zipped up by aliens into outer space for probing missions, some conspiracy theorists believed he was held and gagged in a strip club until the final whistle, some believe franzie had kidnapped him so to not let ShaggyDude milk his glory. But in essence most the conspiracy theorists believed this was yet another Swedish conspiracy to favour teams of the Swedish Leagues –sigh- so unoriginal. Not setting up though seemed to have a hidden desired ingredient because Gunnar had set up presuming he knew what Shaggy would do, and his setup was now shook up to the core. A tough match looked to have been won when Piton headed his side in front with a quarter of an hour to go. Anthony Stafford wasn’t taking the defeat lying down though, and he equalized for the Ballbreakers with an oozing effort from 25 yards. Extra Time was eventless so we went to penalties, Emile Pidgley missed for the BB’s but Joe Pepe spared his blushes by skying his into Sky Valley for Avd. It was 3 apiece heading into the final two penalties, Helge Wilander is great at penalties.... and he proved it here with a cool penalty into the bottom right. Lefteris Georgopoulos had all the pressure on his shoulders... and the star freekick taker saw his kick parried by Patrik Iwarson – the only player old enough to remember Avd’s last XCL success – which won a second XCL trophy for Gunnar and Avd. 53!
In doing this they joined an Elite bracket of teams to have won the competition twice, their old nemesis Schakal for one, the Hellmoppers and now Smögens IF since then. They also hold another record – ‘the last original Swedish league team to win the XCL before an International League team won it’. But here we can see that the successes have come fifteen seasons apart, showing Gunnar has created two dynasty’s at the club which is more than can be said about any of the other XCL winners (bar maybe nobego’s silverware sucking monster side). Here are interviews from ShaggyDude and Bejjita where we look to uncover the missing person problem once and for all and I talked to Bejjita about his time ruffling feathers with the Final League Champs:
XD: So Shaggy, I take you back to the sixth of January 2010 after your side had done brilliantly to reach the XCL Final you were there against Avd. 53 - can you remember your feelings about the Final before it was played?
ShaggyDude: All I can remember was I was doing a trainee program in the Amazonas of Ecuador and was quite focused on that. Somehow X11 was less important, and distant. To even be able to reach my account I had to travel on a kind of a pick-up truck for 45 minutes to get to an internet-café. But I knew I had the opportunity to win, FC Ballbreakers was at their prime and I thought of the final just as any other game. Even though I knew meeting Avd. 53 was something special.
XD: Now through no fault of your own you were unable to really get online and setup as you'd want to setup, looking back now do you think the final could've been different if things were different, after all even with no win bonus your side only lost out on penalties..
ShaggyDude: Of course the final could have been different! Give me one example of a manager that has managed to win the XCL without any tactic at all (it was all default) and no win bonus. Making me lose on penalties was just putting more salt in the wound (as we say in Sweden...). Honestly, of course I could have lost anyways but since just a win bonus adds 15% to the performance, it would have made quite a difference. The worst part is that I knew I had XCL final, and I was able to log on just half an hour AFTER it had played (time difference isn't always on my side...)
XD: Now I don't want to put a downer on things but you missed out on the XCL really with the Ballbreakers after two defeats in the Final, how annoying is it not to have scooped the major honours after winning so many domestic trophies at the Ballbreakers or does your Xpert Ladies win in the HoF make up for your lack of XCL glory (to help give us a clearer understanding of how much Gunnar's success may have meant to him)?
ShaggyDude: Well, as I remember it I tried to become immortalized and forever remembered on X11 as the first manager getting into the Hall of Fame for both men and women's teams (I believe no one has done it yet, correct me if I'm wrong), so no domestic trophies can make up for the loss in the final. I mean, you always try to do something new, something you haven't done before. And the irony in this story is that I actually won the Xpert Ladies without any tactic or win bonus in the last game (true story, as I remember it my girlfriend at the time from Norway was visiting and didn't really like me spending time indoors at the computer with this "nerdy" game). So, maybe that was just destiny spitting on me and the FC Ballbreakers?
XD: Your preferred method of teambuilding, mostly youth, mostly aging players, a bit of both or a conveyor belt?
ShaggyDude: Well, according to the creators of the site, a conveyor belt should be the most advantageous strategy and I guess my method is something similar since I don't have time looking through the transfer. I try to develop my youths and I suck at selling players at a high price since I always keep them too long, often until they retire. I'm not an economist - but an optimist! :)
(and now to Bejj)
XD: Statistically [in the two legged XCL quarter finals] you were unlucky to lose out overall, was that your biggest blow on xpert eleven?
Bejjita: Although it probably might seem like going out of the XCL was my biggest blow overall, it actually wasn't. Thing is, I was punching well above my weight just to qualify for the competition, let alone win my group and knock out another giant in Ibiza CF! Just getting to the quarters was a bonus! Gunnar had a fantastic team as you can see in the Hall of Fame with a 20 skilled FKer in Helge Wilander. There was simply no stopping him. My team's skill was 12 on average and I had a 12 skill keeper, along with a 12 skill FKer, very average for the XCL. If anything I'm pleased kept things as closely as I did!
XD: You were and still are England's only number one in the official rankings, Gunnar has never achieved that [certainly in my recollection] on this game, would you have swapped this statistic for the XCL Title with Joppes that season?
Bejjita: Oh yeah, without a doubt. For me the ultimate goal in the game is to reach the Hall of Fame and win the XCL. Getting to number 1 is a very nice achievement but it doesn't compare in my opinion. Not that it is dismissed lightly, not many people even get to play in the XCL, let alone win it. Right now I'm looking to build a team that can get there and win it one day, I hope I can achieve both one day.
XD: Where do Avd. 53 and Gunnar rank in terms of the fiercest competition you've had to face in the xpert leagues?
Bejjita: Depends what you mean by fiercest. If you mean the opponent with the most skillbars, then Gunnar is up there, if not at the top. Both his side and Jancsi's Ibiza side I faced in the round previous were among some of the largest competitive deficit's I've ever had to try and bridge. But tactically I don't seem to remember Gunnar being anything incredible. I can see why not, seeing as he just had to make sure he won the game, but it is clear given how close the games were and how far we were from each other strength wise that tactically I gave a good fight.
XD: Knowing your strong views on teambuilding, do you think Gunnar builds his teams the right way or would you rather he tried to sustain League ranking as well as building his side at the same time [or indeed some other brill-o-wow method :D]?
Bejjita: Well he won the XCL, so not many can argue that he doesn't build great teams, I don't think that's debatable. As for his rebuild, well I'm quite pleased he's still there, before SambaSven and RDS, the last 8 XCL's were won by managers who have decided to leave the club at some point in the future, it's cool that Gunnar is going to try and take them back to the top eventually, although it's going to take a long time. Whether he succeeds will depend on his ability to gain results at the same time. After being hammered for two seasons it seems Gunnar has found himself in a division where he can grind out a result or two, if he can stay up it will help things significantly. He will lose his keeper Iwarson next season though, and given how vital he was to the Avd machine, the difficulty of staying high in the divisions will increase significantly. He's got some nice players coming through though Engmark and the two young strikers I'm sure will get to a level where they can walk into any team on the game.
XD: Do you retract your comment about Avd. 53 being more than just simply 'Sylvester Acreman FC'
Bejjita: Nice topic to dig up there, made for good reading! Well it depends how you see it really, Gunnar went and sold nearly the entire team, including Acreman so the drop was a lot worse than I figured it would be. I thought Gunnar would rebuild later and less drastically than he did but it wasn't so. He may however fulfil my wish of him proving me wrong - in terms of building a powerhouse again, he's gotten through some of the hard slog so it's about whether he can stick with it and make it work now before the team gets too old, it's a harder climate to build and rise in than he'll have been used to, but I wish him the best of luck.
And Gunnar still wasn’t finished! Season 22 in the Final League house and that ******* Swede keeps winning everything, just what is his secret? At the start of season 22 Avd were laughing, they won their first five fixtures of the season with their best win being just 2-0 against Kcnr1’s globetrotting side, they’d scored 11 goals in these 5 games, a miracle for them but they were still priding themselves on defensive doggedness which is what they had to grind out a 0-0 away at Kepparen on gameweek six. The double-header was against Mega Guns FC and Wilander scored the winning goal from a freekick in both matches, one of those being in the ninety-third minute which just about summed it up really, Avd doing just enough to clinch the victories. By gameweek nine they could fully concentrate on XCL Football such was the gap behind them to the chasing pack and after beating Kepparen were finally stopped in their tracks by Olympique Baguette who were also in a new chapter with Blu3red as manager. A couple more wins against Steaua.B and FC Pakkohetero bagged another title for Gunnar though, a fourth Final league Title which made them the most successful Final League side, their fourth title taking them past Pakkohetero’s record three titles set within three seasons whilst Avd were in transition.
More XCL Football was on the horizon? You betcha: FC Marand Club who were Xtreme League Cup Champions, Grävman AB who were Master League Cup Champions and IF Elfsborg who were surprise Xpert International Champions were the opposing sides Avd had to contend with this time out. And it probably won’t surprise you to know Helge Wilander scored a hattrick – two goals coming directly from a freekick – to kick Avd off to a winning start against Marand Club. A run of three draws was soon ended with a 2-0 win over Grävman (Wilander scoring both goals) and the defending holders wrapped up the groups with a 1-0 win.
FC Käsehafen were on the menu for Avd in the next round, they proved a tricky task and Avd were extremely fortunate to scrape a 2-1 win in the first leg with Haber and Acreman banging them in. The second leg was far more straight-forward – surprising given it was an away game – Taribo Olofinjana scored twice in five minutes to set Avd up a quarter final meeting with FC_CHELSEA_FC’s Gundars team. Gundars were said to be the dark horses of the competition but they held no fear for Avd and despite Árpád Romai’s second half penalty miss for the green shirted side, Miki Halmai grabbed the game’s only goal to again give Avd a real headache heading into the second leg at Fabriken. For some reason Avd didn’t expect their opponents to go 451, they instead plumped for a 532 formation but had no real success, a bore draw was played out to the lack of surprise of many which saw Gundars go through and Avd bow out as holders, my goodness. I caught up with FC_CHELSEA_FC after the game to sum up his thoughts on being the last ever manager, up 'til now, to have knocked Avd. 53 out of the XCL.
XD: So FC_CHELSEA_FC you're probably most famous in the XCL for some quite intense battles with the PF Stratocasters/Guardian Angels team but away from that you managed to defeat Avd. 53 2-1 on aggregate and in doing so were the last team to defeat Gunnar's side in the XCL, how great did that victory feel compared to other victories you've had in the past?
FC_CHELSEA_FC: Well.. It was very special to play in XCL and we played very well too. Those games will always be in my memory and a part of Gundars FC's history. To play against a coach like Gunnar himself was amazing and honestly that victory was maybe the "best one" if I had to choose some performances. I still remember the feeling at the stadium, our fans were incredible and the feeling in the dressing room after. Mamma Mia!
XD: This result combined with many others actually made you global number one for a period but how would you rank Gunnar as a manager, obviously it's hard to answer given you only had the luxury of two XCL matches opposing him but was there anything he did differently or similarly to any other managers you've faced in the past.
FC_CHELSEA_FC: It feels like a long time ago since I was a star manager if we can call it that. I have played against many different managers and if I have to be honest I don't remember anything he did special. He shook my hand before and after the game and exchanged some words, when the referee started the game he lived in it totally and was shouting exactly as everybody. I got an impression that he's a real gentleman and can both win and lose with proud. Fantastic lad!
XD: Do you agree with Gunnar's methods of teambuilding or are their any other methods of teambuilding which, in your opinion, are better in this game?
FC_CHELSEA_FC: He buy young players and that's ok if he believe in them. It takes time but if you are the right man for the job it will surely be good. I think his method in a long term wiew - is good!
Yet another rebuild
I bet you’re wondering, yes now you’ve told us Avd’s life story, where are the legendary team now? Well after that XCL Final, Gunnar began his third transition phase of the club and has seemed to have stabilized League position with talent and potential, his side are in Division 3c of the Final League with a squad full of promising youngsters and now they’ve banked another 41 million econ, who knows who else they’ll buy. I for one though am very excited about the coming moves of Avd and have no doubt they’ll return to the big time, a sentiment Final League user and friend of Gunnar – gejjen – was only quick to concur. Having been in the Final League almost as long as Gunnar and Avd. 53 I chose him as my pot luck interviewer at the end to sum up his own jokey rivalry with a site legend!
XD: So gejjen you spoke [prior to this interview] about their being quite a rivalry between a few teams Avd. 53 have faced, Jokkmokk being one of them, could you perhaps go into more detail about these in-house Final League rivalries?
gejjen: I actually don't think the rivalry has been that big. I don't think that the elderly people at Jokkmokk Vårdcentral even remember the factory workers from Avd.53. Usually they don't even remember to put on their pants.
Our own boys from Helsingfors Rhythmic Gymnastics have always had some nice games with Avd.53. It has usually been friday nights when the factory has been empty so that the owner Gunnar von Pickelhaupt wouldn't find out.
The closest thing to rivalry I can remember is when our star player Graeme Mohan stole Sune Adelsköld's socks. There was a little fuzz about that for a while...
XD: At the moment your team is in a very different state to the ones at Avd and Jokkmokk, whereas there's focusses primarily on raising young talent you've got a nice little conveyor belt system going on, bearing this in mind do any of you share secrets with each other at the Factory?
gejjen: Of course we don't share secrets at the factory. If Gunnar von Pickelhaupt would find out he would sue us and fire every worker at Avd.53. Rhythmic Gymnastics is a fantastic sport where poeple of different age and skill can have fun together, that is our motto at Helsingfors RG. Avd.53 are probably using young talent because they are cheap workers, the owner is quite greedy.
XD: This may be a difficult one to answer given you know Gunnar on a social level but how would you rate him as a manager compared to other managers you've faced in the past?
gejjen: I think Gunnar von Pickelhaupt is an old fashioned, strict manager who runs his business with an iron fist. I'm just happy that the workers have been able to keep playing football despite his efforts to end this.
XD: And finally, are you looking forward to maybe battling Avd for future Final League titles if he can lead his side back to the top flight, providing you stay there ;)?
gejjen: I really hope that Gunnar would let the boys participate in the Final League again. It would be nice to meet them in a game without hiding from him.
I'll leave it up to you brave, brave users who have fought this far to the end of the article to provide your own conclusions of Gunnar and Avd. 53, my own conclusion? A legend in every sense of the word
(Special thanks to the five interviewees for their top notch responses)
